Suzie and Abby were in their element. Here are a couple of pictures of the two of them returning from one of their hikes. Actually they were very good and loved being out in the country. I was a little perturbed when Janice started talking about the bear sightings their bishop had recently had up the canyon. American's unlike South Africans believe in letting their wildlife roam free. Very daring and noble of them but a little un-nerving especially when we reflect on the fact that a young boy was dragged off by a bear last year just up American Fork canyon and mauled to death. I did eventually fall asleep on Saturday night after experiencing our tent almost collapsing when a huge wind came rolling down the canyon. We sold our trailer ( caravan ) when we were in Idaho because we were paying to store it and were not using it enough, gas prices etc. When we go camping we now once again sleep in our tent. We have a big blow up mattress which is very nice but I still prefer sleeping on our smaller blow up mattress because I don't have to fight to stop myself from rolling into Richard all night. They are really not made for two people.
No sooner had I dozed off on Saturday night than a huge wind came gushing down the canyon. I really mean a huge wind, the wind moved almost like waves coming in to shore. They kept rolling down the canyon getting stronger and louder one after the other and then eventually the big one that had the igloo tent we were in almost folded in half. The one side ,was pushed so hard by the wind that the side of the tent was about 10" from my nose. Once the wind had gone the tent bounced back. Sunday night was another story, torrential rains that never ceased for one moment . In the morning we discovered that the fibre glass rods holding the tent up had infact snapped. Hopefully we can replace the tent rods otherwise we are left with a useless tent.
