We spent a lovely long weekend down in California with Johnathan,Mackenzie and boys . Johnathan rented a boat and we went around the harbour near Venice beach.

At last we got our Pergola up over the garage.Our houses are so much alike in the neighborhood that I wanted to make ours a little different.After much persuasion I got Richard to buy the wood for me for my birthday ,designed the pergola with some help from pictures off the internet ,cut the wood ,stained it and up it went.

On the way back from our trip to California we decided to stop for ice-creams .A gas tanker was in the drive- thro so we had to drive around the building ,then reverse up to the window to place out order.Richard didn't see the speakers and reversed right into it.The speakers were none the worse for the bang but our car wasn't so lucky.

Catherine Lake Hike August 25th 2011

We drove up Little Cottonwood Canyon to above Alta ski Resort and left at about 9am for our hike up to Catherine Lake.

So many flowers,I have never seen before on hikes in Utah. Makes me want to go hiking more. I really need to get more fit.

As we came up the hill to the meadow we met three ladies on their way down.They warned us to be very quiet because there was a female moose with her baby. We quietly rounded the bend and were fortunate enough to be very close the the moose. We took great care not to frighten them and they seemed quite happy to just graze quietly while we watched. We actually had to wait a little while because they were so close to the trail. What luck!

Looking down on the meadow below we could still see the mother moose in the distance. So many flowers lined the pathway it was really quite beautiful. This little orange flower is called 'Indian Paintbrush'

When we got to the top of Catherine pass we could see Catherine Lake below and Sunset Peak behind it.It is another mile or so up to Sunset Peak. We climbed up a sandy stetch to a knoll to the right ,not too difficult but it gives you a view of all three lakes.

We climbed a little higher where we could look down on all three lakes. Lake Catherine,Lake Martha and Lake Mary. Another 15 or 20 minutes of hiking would have got us to the top of Sunset Peak,but by then I was too tired,finding it a little difficult to breathe.

Clark's Trail is a great hike that's close to civilization. It climbs from lower Corner Canyon to Traverse Ridge in Draper. As an out-and-back, it's 3.2 miles (1.6 miles each way) with 750 vertical feet of climbing. I decided to do this short hike again on Saturday morning. A friend had shown me the hike a couple of weeks ago . I tried to find the trail head on Friday ,eventually found it,started out on a hike but went the wrong way and decided to rather come back on Saturday morning and start out a little earlier.
The weather was really nice and after once again going the wrong way I retraced my steps after a few minutes,found the right way and got to the top in 42 minutes and 14 secs including my mistaken short hike.I'm not sure if I was silly or not but I ran 90% of the way down and am paying for it today with sore thighs.
I should take the camera with me because one has some really nice views of the valley on the way.

We finally left for Island Park at about 8am after unpacking and re-packing Janice and Jory's car with all of our stuff and the food. We stopped at Bear World just outside Rexburg.

Old Faithful

In 1929, Johnny Sack leased a small tract of land from the United States Forest Service and began building his log cabin at Big Springs. Little did Johnny know when he first acquired the choice building site, his home would become a landmark one day discussed in the United States Congress.Due to its unique location and picturesque setting, Johnny’s cabin and nearby water-wheel have long been one of the most photographed sites in Island Park. The cabin attracts thousands of visitors each summer interested in the log and stone structure as well as the building’s colorful creator.is the little water wheel that Johnny Sacks built to provide his cottage with electricity at Big Springs.

Upper Mesa Falls, aka Big Falls, is an absolutely awesome waterfall dropping about 114 ft. on the Henrys Fork of the Snake River. The power of the water falling here is great, and the width of the waterfall is 300 ft. wide; it reminds us of a small Niagara Falls.

Johnathan and Mackenzie came up from California a few days earlier before the planned Family Re-union at Island Park in Idaho. Kieran was in the vege garden with me when he got stung by a bee and bitten by several mosquitoes within minutes. Of course we quickly put baking soda on the bite and wrapped it in a big bandage for special effects, the crying soon stopped .

Koeksuster recipe

Sift 4 cups flour,2 TB spoons baking powder and 1/2 tsp salt.

Rub in a heaped TB butter with finger tips until like fine bread crumbs.

Mix 2 cups water with 2 eggs and add to flour and mix to a dough.Allow to stand for about an hour.

Roll out ,cut and braid.

Fry in deep oil for a few minutes until golden brown on both sides.

Remove from oil and quickly dip in to cold syrup.Put syrup bowl in a bowl of ice.

NB I have a friend who is a chef and she says use hot syrup.I have tried it with the same results.This way you don't have to make the syrup the day before.

Syrup

10 cups sugar

5 cups water

1 tsp cream of tartar

1 stick cinnamon or 2tsp glycerine and 1tsp lemon essence

Boil for 5 minutes.

Put in fridge to chill .Or if you prefer use the syrup warm.

Makes about 60 koeksusters.

Drop about 5 koeksusters into the pot of hot oil.I heat the oild to anout med to slightly over medium heat.If it is too hot they only cook on the outside and are raw on the inside.

Use a second set of tongs to push the koeksusters under the syrup,hold it down for a few seconds,you can hear the syrup being sucked up.

I put the koeksusters on a cookie cooling rack over a cookie sheet so that the excess syrup can drip off. When done bag them and refrigerate.

As we were leaving Juneau we were able to watch this ferry boat coming in loaded with cargo. Buses ,cars etc Juneau has only 50 miles of roads,no way in to Juneau but by air or ship ,so all their supplies come by ship.

we woke fairly early on Wednesday morning to see the glacier.The captain was quite pleased with hinself because he had managed to avoid some rather big ice-bergs and was fairly close to the glacier itself.We were told that they often can not get this close because of the icebergs.

So on Thursday morning we got in to Britiah Columbia ,and off the ship eventually at about 8,30am. We got on a hop on hop off tour bus $36 each. Thinking this was a good idea we followed a large portion of the guests on the cruise and went on the bus around the town.The tour guide suggested that one stay on the bus for the first tour and then get off where ever one wanted to the second time around. He failed to mention that he would sit waiting at the dock to re-load with passengers for a further 15 minutes before we would get under way again.Our first stop was the petting zoo.I wanted to pet one of those little goats so badly ,we hopped on the bus again after that ,got off and then never saw a bus again.we walked and walked the whole tour route almost ourselves before another driver of another bus( not a Hop On and Hop Off bus) but a driver for the same company offered to take us up the hill to Craig Darroch castle.

Nicki in red was the Head waiter( from Croatia) Maluti ( from India)on the left was the waiter and Anthony( from India) on the right was our assistant waiter.We had these three every night and they really gave us first class service.

Ab kept us entertained with his singing,he could sing all the words of just about any song Richard could come up with.Bob had such a nice sense of humour we really enjoyed both these couples who we got to sit with really by chance.We had been scheduled to eat at 8.30 pm and changed our time to the 6,30pm sitting. They had both changed their tables as well and so by chance we got to sit together and really seemed to enjoy each others company.

We meet some very nice people on the cruise. Irene and Bob Tehran , Abead and Maggie Cohen,sat at out dinner table every night.

Ab and Maggie were on their 25th Royal Carribean cruise,so they were invited to sit at the Captains table one night,they were very chuffed and got sa lovely picture presented to them of their dinner group.They live in Sacramento,Irene and Biob live in Tuscon Arizona.

China town a restaurant Leyland suggested we go to in Seattle,but we were so tired of food after the cruise we just did not feel like eating when we got there.
Pikes Public Market Place in Seattle.We have been before and just love it,flea market and food. We had some lovely vegetable curry samoosas at this market.$1.99 We went back for three days and had one each day.

We drove to the little town on Westport on the coast on Sunday morning after picking up a car at the airport. This tower is a watch,or outlook tower,at the base of the tower is a Tsunami warning sign explaining what to do in the case of a Tsunami. I think they should build underground railroads like the have in San Francisco that goes under the bay. When a Tsunami comes people can just hop on the train and it could take them out into the ocean ,under the ocean instead of trying to run in the opposite direction. Hmmm! I guess they would have to build a lot of trains.,well enough to fit the coastal residence on anyway.

We had lunch here walked around a bit and headed back home to our Day's Inn Motel.

We had a couple of hours to spend in Seattle on Monday morning before going to the airport to get our flight back home. We decided to go down to the wharf. We came across this guy carving a totem pole in remembrance of his brother who was killed in August of 2010,he was crossing the street in Seattle with a large piece of wood in his hand,a piece of wood he was planning to carve.A police man mistook the wood for a weapon and shot the guy.His brother was commissioned by the city to carve a totem pole in his memory.

Well we decided to all meet at Pallasades and camp for the night.That didn't happen as the cabin was half the size we expected and the loo was across the dusty road and down the hill.After a little vote the girls decided this was for the birds and we opted for our own ablution blocks. Richard was not a happy chap.We had a lovely day all together and really need to try and do this more often.The kids had such a lot of fun on the paddle boat.It would be so nice if Johnathan and Mackenzie lived closer with the kids.

A Day in April

So because I have not blogged for so long( I did attempt a couple of months ago but it didn't work for some reason) I have to go back and look at my pictures and see what crafty things I have been up to. I must say at the same time that I have been doing spending some good times with the grandkids but don't alway remember to take pictures.They are the light of Richard and my life,they give us so many laughs it is so refreshing.
Back to the picture.Johnathan had bought some garden chairs from a guy who came knocking on their door.He sent me pictures ,I tried to make my own ,copying the pictures. They turned out quite nicely.I made four.

Long awaited bookshelves

We had our fireplace centered in the middle of the wall in our lounge when we built the house so that we could one day build bookcases on either side. Richard always thinks I am crazy when I suggest these projects because of course I expect him to do them with my help. He kept reminding me that he is not a carpenter but I insisted that he could do it if he just went step by step following a plan in my head.

Well he made a start on the right hand side ,did the cupboards underneath one Saterday and then I found this old TV cabinet in a secondhand store called Emilie Jayne in Salt Lake. I thought I was really clever because I thought we could hang it on the wall and that would save him building some of the shelves and would make each side different which is wahat I wanted.We much grunting and groaning we managed to get it up and hung it on the wall.At first it was too high and he was not too happy when I suggested that we lower it a little ,this meant ripping it off the wall again,not an easy task. He then built the cabinets underneath and we rested it on top of them and attached it to the wall.He built a little shelf on the top and walla there you have it. Not too shabby.Our son -in -law Jory much to my brother Malcolms disgust was ropped in to spray painting it for us. Malcolm has worked in a body shop all his working life and says it is a pain in the neck when people ask you to spray things for them.

I'm still trying to organize the shelves and put things on them,which of course will mean a few purchases.The cupboards underneath are going to be empty for a while because I'm not sure what to put in them. Perhaps some of my seasonal 'stuff'.

Richard is dreading the next time he hears me say" I've been thinking" Well really I think it has lightened the lounge up a whole lot .Well done Ricardo!

Quiet Books

This is the problem, Making Quiet Books is really very time consuming and speaking from experience selling them is just not worth while. It took me about 3 mths to make the 5 Quiet Books I made for my grandchildren and my sisters one grandchild. I didn't work on them every day but as Christmas loomed nearer I worked on them constantly for days. Trying to calculate my time and expense is so hard. I think I could make one book in 10 days if I sat at it for at least 5hrs a day. So how do you charge for 50 hrs of work. It really is just not cost effective to sell them. I think $75- $100 a book is not bad for all the work ( that works out to $2 an hour if I were to charge $100) but who would pay that. I think most people would do what I do ,look at it and say 'Oh she's crazy I can make it for less than that" and then never get around to doing it because it takes so much time and decipline to get it done.

Well I thought it was time at last to make the grandchildren Quiet Books for Christmas. I used to make a similar book in South Africa that I sold to parents whose children were at Nursery School with out children and to teachers who wanted to have a book in their classroom. I've made these ones a little differently .Some of the pages are completely new ideas and the pages have been made so that they can unbutton and be replaced with new pages with different skills to practice.

Kim and Todd invited us to go up to Midway with them to the Swiss Christmas Festival. As you know the traditional Father Christmas ,St Nicholas wears green.So here they are Father and Mother Christmas with Kim ,Todd and Emily.

Dale Le Baron

Oh what a loss! Dale Le Baron was kindness personified. In 1972 I moved back home to Durban to begin teaching,Dale Le Baron was sent to South Africa on assignment to start the Seminary and Institute program in South Africa. I was called as a Seminary teacher and had the privelege of taking part in his training program and participating in his monthly meetings. He inspired everyone with his enthusiasm and obvious love for the savior and the gospel.
I gained such a strong testimony of the gospel as I studied along with the Seminary students I taught .
Dale Le Baron played a huge role in the lives of so many South Africans. He was a missionary in South Africa when our family joined the church and then after completing his assignment as the pioneer instructor for the Seminary and Institute program he later came back as a Mission President to South Africa. It is still so hard to believe that he is gone and our prayers and thoughts go out to all his family . At the same time I think of the young man who knocked him ,Laura his wife and their friend down.This young man must be having such sleepless nights,he needs to know that it was an accident and our prayers are with himas well.Anyone who has experienced ,actually lived through a tragedy or horrific incident knows how hard it is to get that our of ones mind,so I think of him often as well and know that Dale would want him to go on with his life.Laura said as much the other night whenshe was interviewed on TV and what she said was just typical of the Le Baron family. May Heavenly Father bless them all.
